Common Pregnancy Test FAQs

Did You Know?

Approximately 1 in 3 women who experience an unplanned pregnancy wait more than a month before getting a pregnancy test.1 Early testing can provide crucial information and support options to help you make informed decisions on next steps.

Have questions about your unplanned pregnancy options? Text with a care expert at 208-521-5488.

  • It's best to wait until you've missed your period before taking a pregnancy test for the most accurate results. This gives your body time to produce enough of the pregnancy hormone (hCG) for the test to detect.

If you're anxious to know sooner, you can test up to 6 days before your missed period, but the results may not be as reliable. Medical-grade tests, like the ones at our clinic, can often detect pregnancy earlier and provide more accurate results than home tests.

If you are unsure when you possibly conceived or have an irregular period, we can help. Make an appointment or text with a care expert at 208-521-5488 for help navigating some of those difficult questions.

  • The main differences between at-home pregnancy tests and the medical-grade tests we offer are accuracy, sensitivity, and confirmation.

Our medical-grade test is highly accurate and can often detect pregnancy earlier than home tests. In addition, we provide options counseling and, for those who qualify, an ultrasound to confirm results and determine conception dates.

  • Several factors can affect the result of a pregnancy test:

    • Testing Too Early: If you test before missing your period, there may not be enough of the pregnancy hormone yet, which can lead to a false negative.
    • Diluted Urine: Drinking too much water before taking the test can dilute your urine, making it harder for the test to detect the hormone.
    • Expired Test: Using a test past its expiration date can result in incorrect results.
    • Incorrect Use: Not following the instructions properly, like not waiting long enough before reading the result, can impact accuracy.
    • Certain Medications: Some medications can interfere with the results, so it’s important to check with a doctor if you're taking any.

These are all things we can discuss and help prevent when you receive a no-cost pregnancy test at our center. A care expert will guide you through the testing process to ensure your results are accurate.
